New York NightmareThis is the summer of 2009, right, because last year the New York Yankees were struggling early on in their last season in at Ruth’s Yankee Stadium. They trailed the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox from the beginning before making a last second run for respectability. This season the unlikely team thwarting any good cheer in the inaugural season at the New Yankee Stadium is the Toronto Blue Jays…and the Boston Red Sox. The hitting is back even with A-Rod plagued by steroid scandal after steroid scandal. I am waiting to here an account of him powering up before a little league game in Miami. Is this truly the end of a Yankees empire, a Mantle Manifest destiny, or is this just ‘80s again. The fashions are back, the music is back, the high shoulder pads are back, and sadly the high waist jeans are back (Noooooo!!!!). Why would a Bronx baseball drought not be back as well? Is the only hope for fall baseball in Queens with the New York Mets? So far the Philadelphia Phillies have control of he division with the always dangerous minimum-wage Marlins on their heels. Still, at sometime the Mets have get back to first place and back to the World Series. The roster has an ace (Johan Santana), an automatic closer (Francisco Rodriguez), and the next HoJo (David Wright). All they need is a young, talented outfielder to snort blow before the game and they should be blessing Citi Field (C’mon Daniel Murphy just give it a try). The Mets won the division not too long ago in 2006 and yet it feels like the Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins have been sitting atop the division since the Yankees decimated the Mets in the 2000 World Series.
