Barry Bonds went home

Barry Bonds went home for a three-day spring break in the middle of spring training.

Nearly all of the players who did not make the trip to Tucson on Saturday were given the day off. With the entire team off on Monday, manager Bruce Bochy gave the slugger Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals off as well.

Bonds enters the 2007 season with 734 career home runs, needing 22 to break Hank Aaron’s career mark of 755.

Braves win without two ailing Jones (AP)No Chipper, no Andruw. So the Atlanta Braves found another Jones to provide the power and back five scoreless innings from Tim Hudson. Brandon Jones hit a two-run homer and Brian McCann added a long shot over the right-field bullpen to lead Atlanta past the Detroit Tigers 4-3 in a split-squad game Sunday.

Oswalt throws 5 2-3 innings, Astros win (AP)Roy Oswalt has a couple of weeks left to get into game shape. It looks like he’s already rounding into form. Oswalt allowed three runs and one hit in 5 2-3 innings to help the Houston Astros beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 Sunday. He didn’t allow a hit until Reed Johnson’s double in the sixth inning. “He was outstanding,” Astros manager Phil Garner said.

Robertson pitches Tigers past Rays 6-0 (AP)Nate Robertson is getting better with experience. Robertson pitched five sharp innings Sunday, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 6-0 victory over Tampa Bay in a split-squad game. The left-hander limited the Devil Rays to a pair of singles while reducing his ERA to 0.73 through four spring starts. He struck out four and walked one.

Phils’ Myers tosses six strong innings (AP)Brett Myers and Scott Kazmir are ready for opening day, even if only one of them winds up pitching that day. Myers tossed six-plus strong innings and Pat Burrell hit a two-run homer, but the Tampa Bay Devil Rays rallied against Philadelphia’s bullpen for a 5-4 victory in a split-squad game Sunday. Kazmir allowed three runs, five hits and struck out seven in 5 1-3 innings, his second consecutive…
